An Intention is…

A plan starts with an intention, like “having a nice vacation in Seattle.”  Then, you work back from that intention or goal and create small and manageable steps to get there. Things like researching vacation spots, making reservations, buying tickets, and hoping everyone stays healthy before the trip.

Each one of those steps is a mini intention.  Things like finding great vacation spots from reliable sources, intending that the hotel/rental car/airline doesn’t lose reservations, and packing appropriate rain gear because it always rains in Washington.

But what happens when any one of those mini intentions goes badly?  When your flight is delayed, the airline loses your suitcase, or (and this has happened to me 3 times!!) the rental car place runs out of compact cars even though you had a reservation.

This is what we get to call a “learning experience.”  But here’s the thing, almost every one of us has already had that happen to us before, yet we act like it’s a tragic new event that can’t be overcome.

The key is to learn to roll with it.  Decide to have a nice vacation no matter the temperature, or that you had to buy all new rain gear at REI.  Decide to be happy with yourself, even if your business didn’t make your 100K goal. Make your intentions a bit more flexible and less conditional.  Decide to have a great trip to Seattle. Even though all the above actually happened to me, plus the Chinese president made a visit to town, stayed in the hotel across from ours blocking off all the streets for 2 days, and made it impossible to go anywhere we couldn’t walk. I never thought to google THAT before I made the reservation, but we still had a great time.

Make your plans, but also decide that it will all be perfect no matter how it plays out.
