A Day at the Del Mar Fair
Fried s'mores, fried ice crème, fried fish, fried chips, fried chicken, fried Twinkie, Austrian battered potato covered with “sauce”, garlic cheese fries, just about anything dipped in chocolate, every kind of meat on a stick, and much, much more...
Not sure if the county fairs of the past were all about food but they sure seem to be now. Personally, my favorite was the Garlic cheese fries. And NO I did not try all of those foods but I did consider them and made a selection, actually 3 but who’s counting.
As someone who helps people lose weight it would be socially irresponsible to not tell you those foods are all BAD, VERY VERY BAD, but I suspect you already knew that. I also suspect that you might not eat those foods very often since they don’t usually serve chocolate dipped bacon at the local fast food place.
When you deny yourself something you really want over and over again that item or in this case food goes from being sustenance to having and almost biblical importance and if you don’t give in at the time you will usually give in later, in much larger quantities.
The reality is it’s not about what you eat 1 or 2 days a year at the fair. It’s the choices you make day in and day out that determine if you will be fat or thin. Things like using real crème in your coffee rather than skim milk, Soda rather than Ice tea with lunch, extra helpings of anything, ranch dressing rather than non-fat Italian.
My advice is to eat healthy most of the time and let yourself eat what you want 1 day or at the very least 1 meal a week. That way you never feel denied and the donuts someone brought into work no longer become an obsession, they become something you can have if you really want them on Sunday.
Have fun at the fair and pass on the fried Twinkie, it’s not that great.
